My Favourite Cottage-Inspired Paint Colours
If you were to tell me from 2021 that I loved to decorate with colour in 2025, I would think that you were telling me a joke. It’s hard to believe that not that long ago, I was terrified of decorating with colour. I used to only decorate with neutrals, and the odd pop of colour here and there, but much of my problems stemmed from not having a basic understanding of what I liked in my home decor. When I stumbled upon the cottagecore trend, things quickly fell into place. I longed for my home to feel similarly to what I had grown up with, including feelings of nostalgia… like you were visiting your grandma’s farmhouse, wrapped up in the coziest quilt while the rain fell and cooled off the hot summer day.
Now, in 2025, I absolutely love decorating with colour! Gone are the days of only-neutrals, and boring palettes, and now I can confidently say I know exactly what colours I love to decorate with in my space. So, let’s talk about some of my favourite cottage-inspired paint colours, and where I’ve used them!
Blues
I think blue may be one of my favourite colours, if I’m being honest. It’s a colour I tend to gravitate towards, especially in my home decor, but also in clothing and accessories. Blue personally makes me feel very calm when I see it in my space, and that’s why I love decorating with it. When I purchased thrifted dining chairs last year, I knew I wanted to add a pop of colour to my space and I ended up choosing Ocean Swell from Behr. It definitely leans a more grey-blue, but the colour is a great addition to my space. Overall, I tend to lean into these shades of grey-ish tones of blue to create a cozy cottage vibe.
Greens
Another colour that I love adding to my space is green, and particularly in the sage, and English cottage green. I always feel like so many people had the opinion that blue and green don’t always mesh together, but I think having the right tones makes the difference! Though I haven’t painted anything in my home with a green yet, I know for sure I’ll be looking into it when the time is right (maybe for my next furniture DIY!?).
Yellows
I have fallen victim to the popularity of butter yellow in the year 2025, and I have no regrets about it! I recently painted the lower cabinets in my kitchen a soft yellow from Canadian Tire called ‘Honey Milk’, and frankly, I thought I hated it at first. I was fully prepared to paint everything back the next day, but after sitting on it for a few days, I fell in love. The kitchen feels like the perfect place to add a little yellow too – it’s like a nice sunny welcome every morning.
Neutrals
You can’t go wrong with neutrals, right? I used to be adamant that the best neutral was a pure white (I know, what was I thinking?), but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that there’s definitely got to be a little undertone of colour in there! Depending on what colours I have in the room, that would dictate what undertone I was looking for. But since I like to decorate with primarily blues, greens and yellows, it’s likely going to be one of those! (Though, I must give a special shoutout to this gorgeous soft, neutral pink – Scallop, from Farrow & Ball).
There you have it! All of my favourite cottage-inspired paint colours. Which colour or shades are jumping out to you? I think it’s safe to say that for me it’s greens and blues. I just love using them in my space because they feel so calm, yet cozy, plus they bring in the feeling of nature!
