8 Activities To Do This Spring

Though I am a self-proclaimed lover of fall, spring is undeniably my second favourite season. There’s nothing quite like the awakening of the world again after a long, cold winter – hearing the birds chirp outside at 6am as the sun rises, and enjoying your time watering the garden with a cup of coffee in hand. Spring really is a magical time of the year, in my opinion, and quite frankly, I’m a big believer in enjoying more time offline (ironic, given that I’m writing on a blog, I know!), and getting in touch with our hobbies, and our personalities again. Here are some of my favourite activities to do in the spring.

01. Visit a Farm

One of my favourite things to do in the spring is visit a farm. There’s nothing that says “spring” to me quite like seeing all of the little baby animals, especially the lambs, kids, chicks and calves. However, please exercise extra caution, and listen to biosecurity rules more closely than ever with the rise of bird flu transmissions.

02. Go to the Farmer’s Market

Another absolute favourite of mine is going down to the farmer’s markets. I count down the days until May when the markets reopen for the summer months. They’re definitely a bit pricier than going to the grocery store, but it feels good knowing your produce, flowers and other items are coming from your local farmers.

03. Treat Yourself to a Bouquet

This is a tip that I give to everyone, year-round, at all times – just buy yourself a bouquet of flowers! Life is too short to not treat yourself to the fresh flowers you see in the store. I highly recommend purchasing flowers grown locally if possible. Unfortunately, many flowers grown in Central America use a high amount of pesticides that you’re then pouring into the water system (when emptying your vase), and getting on your hands when handling the flowers. Check your local farmer’s market for a flower farmer!

04. Go on a Bike Ride

I will admit, this one is new to me this year because I haven’t had a bike, or even been on a bike ride in years, but now that I’ve got a new bike, I plan to go on so many bike rides this year. Instead of being a weekend warrior, this spring (and summer) will be all about evening bike rides down to the local ice cream parlour, to a park for a little picnic, or just getting out and about to explore.

05. Have a Picnic

Speaking of picnics… go on a picnic! Around this time of year, places like HomeSense begin to flood in with picnic sets. In fact, mine is from there and I love it because it has an attachment for a blanket, and I can easily put it on the back of my bike while we go out to look for the perfect spot to set up.

06. Enjoy Your Coffee (or Tea) Outside

A simple, and easy thing that I love to do in the spring is start enjoying my coffee (or if you drink tea) outside. Getting some sun in the morning does wonders to help me wake up, and sometimes I’ll even bring my e-reader outside with me to enjoy before kicking off the work day.

07. Start a Garden

This probably comes as no surprise, but starting a garden in the pinnacle of spring, if you ask me! This will be my 5th or 6th year gardening, and every year I fall in love with more and more. Though I primarily grow flowers, I like to add some herbs and veggies to mix as well. It’s always nice to run out to the garden in the middle of cooking dinner to grab fresh herbs to season the meal!

08. Go Berry Picking

Last, but certainly not least – go berry picking! This would make a great summer activity as well, but I tend to lean towards spring because once the humidity hits, I find it a lot harder to convince myself to go outside. Strawberries come into season in June, so this would make a great late-spring activity, and one you could easily do as a family.

So there you have it – 8 of my favourite things to do in the springtime. Feel free to drop some of your favourite activities in the spring; I’m always looking for new ways to get offline more often, and enjoy the beautiful spring outdoors.

Until next time... Emily
